Understanding and Supporting Neurodiverse Learners

This microcredential is delivered at Macquarie University by the Office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Learning and Teaching) as part of the University’s professional development program. Participants attended a series of three workshops that introduced: · key conceptual theories of neurodiversity and its presentation in adult learners · current research on the impact of neurodiversity on learners in higher education · positive perspectives on neurodiversity · the types, characteristics, and prevalence of ADHD · comorbidities that may accompany ADHD · current research on the impact of ADHD on learners in higher education · best practice teaching strategies for neurodiverse learners · Universal Design for Learning · accessibility and usability considerations for neurodiverse learners · action plans for supporting neurodiverse learners Learning Outcomes: On completion of this microcredential, recipients have: · discussed the concept of neurodiversity and how it presents in adult learners · identified the role of executive function in learning and behaviour · explored current research on neurodiversity and its effects on learners in higher education · discussed the characteristics of ADHD and its comorbidities · explored current research on ADHD and its impact on learners in higher education · used case studies to strengthen their understanding of learners’ experience of ADHD · discussed the principles of Universal Design for Learning · discussed accessibility and usability considerations for neurodiverse learners · used case studies to strengthen their understanding of positive learning and teaching approaches for neurodiverse students · created an action plan for supporting neurodiverse learners that integrates evidence-based knowledge and best practice · reflected on their personal understanding of neurodiversity and ADHD in light of workshop content. Activities: Assigned readings, Case Studies, Group Discussion, Structured Reflection, Action Plan Volume of Learning 4.5 hours
