Macquarie Global Leadership Program - Undergraduate

Jamieson Naylor

Macquarie University’s multi-award winning Undergraduate Global Leadership Program (GLP) is a free, self-paced, co-curricular program. It opens up new possibilities for its students by giving them a critical understanding of diverse issues and perspectives, as well as the skills and experiences they need to confidently connect and communicate across cultures. Students attend expert-led workshops on major international issues and professional skills and undertake a challenging and self-directed range of practical activities based on a custom GLP schema. Upon completion, student success is noted on the Macquarie University academic transcript and the Australian Higher Education Graduate Statement (AHEGS). GLP graduates have the skills, experience, and knowledge they need to be confident global leaders. Throughout their journeys with the GLP program, students develop their skills in the following areas: 1. Cross-Cultural Awareness: Understanding and respecting different views, values, behaviours, and customs to one’s own. 2. Problem Solving: The process of establishing the root cause(s) of a problem or issue, identifying and developing potential solutions and selecting a solution to implement that will address the problem or issue. 3. Empathy: Ability to recognise and appreciate the emotions, actions and circumstances being experienced by another person or group. 4. Active Listening: The ability to be an engaged, non-judgemental and attentive listener using questioning and paraphrasing to confirm and clarify one’s interpretation of information with the individual or group delivering their position and/or perspective. 5. Self-management: Ability to control feelings, behaviours and reactions, thereby regulating one’s emotions, to enhance well-being. 6. Adaptability: The capacity, willingness, and flexibility to adjust one’s thinking, and actions in response to both predictable or unpredictable changes in circumstances or conditions. 7. Self-awareness: Accurately recognising one’s own identity, strengths, emotions, limitations, feelings, and behaviours. 8. Critical Thinking: The process of gathering, analysing, synthesising and interpreting information to form new or revised ideas or thinking about information. 9. Ethical Reasoning: The ability to formulate a responsible, fair and just assessment of a situation or issue without undue bias. Program Requirement 1: Students complete 10 Colloquia (workshops) totalling 25 hours of virtual/in-person learning, including the following 3 core topics: • Communicating across cultures • Leadership for impact • The Responsibilities of a Global Citizen. Program Requirement 2: Students choose and complete a diverse selection of experiential learning activities which primarily focus on the main programmatic themes: international, cross-cultural, leadership, innovation or entrepreneurship. Potential activities range from hackathon participation, internships, foreign language learning, community service, and mentor programs, to name a few. Each activity is awarded a point value based on length of time and difficulty level. Students must complete 200 GLP points for this requirement.
