Leadership for new Higher Education Managers

Delivered by

Higher Education Leadership Academy (HELA)

Description

This course is designed for university academic and professional staff who have been recently appointed to management roles. Course participants will develop the skills and knowledge necessary to become highly effective leaders in what is a complex, ever-changing and demanding sector. The course focuses on experiential learning achieved through a combination of practice-based real-world cases and interactive sessions with experienced higher education (HE) leaders. Participants apply the skills and knowledge they develop to their own university, including to a real project that they are currently engaged with or planning to implement. They will reflect on their own leadership responsibilities, the challenges they face and how they might develop the capabilities necessary to advance their careers.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Identify major trends in HE and the challenges and opportunities that these create for those holding university leadership roles.

  • Identify interpersonal, communication and team-based challenges that can occur when ‘leading’ in a university and how these can be managed.

  • Articulate key skills and knowledge necessary to lead curriculum design, innovation and quality assurance.

  • Understand the leader’s role in building and sustaining research performance relevant to the disciplinary field or fields they work with or within, as well as those that apply to cognate and non-cognate research fields.

  • Articulate the key governance and compliance issues that university leaders need to be aware of.
