Applications of Geomorphology in River Management

This micro-credential is designed for professionals looking for Continuing Professional Development (CPD), reskilling, upskilling, or potential academic credit towards a Graduate Certificate or Diploma. It focuses on the use of geomorphology in river management practice, and it is delivered as an intensive, block-mode study, and co-taught as an advanced undergraduate unit. An introductory online tutorial and pre-course private study is followed by a 4-day off-campus fieldtrip to explore forms and processes of rivers, as well as pressing challenges for their conservation and management. This is followed by 4 days on-campus participation focused on principles and strategies for river conservation, management, and rehabilitation within an Australian context. Participants will apply their skills and knowledge in geomorphology and associated disciplines to real-world river and wetland management issues. Although not required, this micro-credential is best undertaken in conjunction with the “Geomorphic Analysis of Rivers” micro-credential. Learning Outcomes 1. Find and use a range of suitable information sources to develop an understanding of the pressing challenges faced in river conservation and management in Australia. 2. Apply geomorphic river science to the solution of river conservation, management and rehabilitation issues. 3. Identify and use appropriate field assessment approaches to measure, analyse and interpret river conservation, management and rehabilitation solutions. 4. Demonstrate skills in communicating using oral, visual and written formats to convey an advanced understanding of the use of geomorphology in river management. • Delivery details: This micro-credential is delivered at Macquarie University and on a fieldtrip. • Volume of Learning: 75 hours (32 hours of workshops, 18 hours of fieldwork, 25 hours of assessment and private study) • Activities: Workshops, In-Class Active Learning, Fieldwork, Self-Directed Online Learning, Private Study • Assessments: In-class role play, Written report The completion of this micro-credential may qualify for recognition of prior learning at Macquarie University equivalent to 5 credit points at 6000 level.
