This microcredential is designed to empower new secondary school History teachers with the essential skills and strategies needed for effective instruction in the classroom. Through a combination of theoretical insights and practical applications, participants will gain the knowledge and confidence necessary to use targeted and evidence-based strategies to support improved student outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this microcredential, you'll be able to:

  • develop the capacity to effectively guide students in improving their historical writing skills

  • reflect on the importance and challenges of teaching source analysis in history classrooms and develop strategies to overcome these challenges

  • explore and practice various strategies to develop effective questioning techniques

  • develop and implement effective strategies to enhance student engagement in the history classroom, fostering a dynamic and inclusive learning environment that promotes critical thinking, relevance, empathy, and active learning

  • deepen an understanding of historical inquiry as a pedagogical approach and develop practical strategies for integrating inquiry-based learning into the classroom.

Learning Design

  • Delivery: This microcredential is delivered as an online, asynchronous learning course.

  • Volume of Learning: 25 hours.

  • Learning Activities: Self-Directed Online Learning, recorded lecture, flipped content delivery, personal experimentation, interactive tasks, summaries, and reflections.

Successful completion of this microcredential enables teachers to self-identify 25 hours of professional development for their NESA accreditation. Macquarie University is a NESA-recognised professional learning provider.
